Futurama is an American animated sci-fi comedy produced by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series follows the experiences of a late-20th-century New York City pizza shipment kid, Philip J. Fry, who, after being unknowingly cryogenically frozen for one thousand years, discovers work at Planet Express, an interplanetary shipment business in the retro-futuristic 31st century. The series was visualized by Groening in the mid-1990s while dealing with The Simpsons; he later on brought David X. Cohen aboard to establish characters and stories to pitch the program to Fox. In the United States, the series aired on Fox from March 28, 1999, to August 10, 2003, prior to stopping production. Futurama likewise aired in reruns on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim from 2003 to 2007, till the network's agreement ended. It was restored in 2007 as 4 direct-to-video movies; the last of which was launched in early 2009. Funny Central participated in a contract with 20th Century Fox Television to distribute the existing episodes and air the movies as 16 brand-new, half-hour episodes, making up a 5th season.
