PS5 Pro Leak Reveals Rumored Name And Design Of Upcoming Console

A recent report on the PS5 Pro has uncovered new, unannounced details about the anticipated console. According to an article published on Dealabs, the reliable PlayStation leaker known as billbil-kun has revealed that the name of the upcoming mid-generation refresh is indeed PS5 Pro. The report also includes a sketch of the console's design, based on what is claimed to be the final packaging box for the new system.

The sketch shows a console design similar to the current PS5 Slim, featuring a white color scheme, two USB-C ports, and a power button on the front. However, the PS5 Pro is distinguished by three black stripes in the center of its outer layer, a detail not found on the base models. Billbil-kun notes that the PS5 Pro appears to be slightly thicker than the PS5 Slim. Additionally, the PS5 Pro depicted in the leak does not include a disc drive, raising questions about whether Sony plans to release a version with a disc drive in the future. The price remains unmentioned, and the controller is still the basic DualSense model.

Billbil-kun anticipates that Sony will officially announce the PS5 Pro during the first half of September 2024. IGN has reached out to Sony for comments on these developments. For more information on the PS5 Pro leak, you can visit IGN's detailed article here.

Rumors about a PS5 Pro have been circulating for some time, and reports suggest that the console might be released in November. Earlier this year, alleged PS5 Pro specifications were leaked online, which IGN considers credible. These leaks indicate several significant upgrades, including a CPU that remains similar to the PS5’s standard model but with a "high-frequency CPU mode," boosting the clock speed by 10% to 3.85 GHz. The GPU is expected to deliver faster rendering and higher-quality ray tracing, with 33.5 teraflops compared to the PS5's 10.28 teraflops. A direct comparison suggests that the PS5 Pro could offer between 16 and 17 teraflops.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro is rumored to feature a scaling and anti-aliasing solution known as PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling), a custom machine learning architecture, and an AI accelerator. The console is also expected to come with a removable disc drive and 1 TB of storage.

This "power-enhanced" update is designed to boost interest in the PS5 before the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025. As previously reported, the stakes are high for GTA 6, and not just for Rockstar and Take-Two.

Sony has experience launching Pro versions of its consoles, with the PS4 Pro releasing in November 2016, three years after the original PS4. The PS5 Pro is expected to launch four years after the PS5’s debut in November 2020.

The PS5 Pro’s release comes at a time when PS5 sales have been declining. In May, Sony stated that PS5 sales had peaked and the console was entering "the final phase of its lifecycle."
